Chasity Burrows Walters, PhD, RN is the Director, Patient & Caregiver Education at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In this capacity, Dr. Walters oversees the development, curation, and dissemination of multimedia educational resources for people with cancer and their caregivers. Through that role she has also lead efforts to improve communication between health care providers and their patients and caregivers through both policy and practice oversight, as well as a combination of face-to-face and virtual trainings. The concept of health literacy is woven through all of her work, which emphasizes plain language and communication skills in verbal communication, as well as the concepts of readability, understandability, and actionability in written and audiovisual educational resources. Previously the manager of the Patient Safety Program, Dr. Walters joined Memorial Sloan Kettering with critical care experience as both a staff nurse and as a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
Dr. Walters is a member of the Cancer Patient Education Network, Eastern Nursing Research Society, the Oncology Nursing Society, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, and Sigma Theta Tau, and she is on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Nursing. Her areas of interest include health literacy, patient and caregiver education strategies, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) health and disparities.
