Author: Dave deBronkart
Dave deBronkart, known online as “e-Patient Dave,” is a Founding Co-Chair of the Society for Participatory Medicine (SPM). During a near-fatal encounter with Stage IV kidney cancer in 2007 he used the internet in every way he could: joining the patient community at ACOR, sharing his online medical records with family and friends, googling, and creating a social support journal at CaringBridge.org.
After he recovered, his primary care physician, Dr. Danny Sands, invited him to visit with Tom Ferguson’s e-Patient Scholars Working Group; he quickly became its most avid blogger. When SPM incorporated in 2009, he was elected co-chair along with Dr. Sands. Today he curates the Society’s blog at e-patients.net, is the Society’s best-known keynote speaker at industry conferences, and is invited to represent the patient engagement perspective in Washington policy meetings.
In 2010 he published his first book, Laugh, Sing, and Eat Like a Pig: How an empowered patient beat Stage IV cancer (and what healthcare can learn from it).
