Biography:
Originally trained as an English teacher, I made a transition from the classroom and into the medical field as a science writer almost 15 years ago. In my present role as Director of Editorial Services for the Department of Radiology at Children’s Hospital, Boston, I assist both clinicians and researchers in preparing a wide range of written materials, from NIH grant applications to manuscripts for publication. My decision to change career pathways came directly as a result of my experience as an advocate to my now deceased parents and to my developmentally disabled sisters of whom I am guardian. At the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where we receive our care, I had the opportunity and privilege of working collaboratively with an outstanding team of medical specialists whose commitment to patient-centered care and shared decision making were clear. The incredible health outcomes we realized because of this approach speak for themselves. I have seen first-hand that participatory medicine can change lives for the better; for not only do my sisters now enjoy vastly improved health because of this model, I also benefit daily from a professional environment that cultivates many of these same values in the setting of pediatric patient care.
